Northern Spain
Have you heard of the Camino de Santiago? Probably yes, as it became a popular travel destination in Europe over the last couple of years. However, we Travelfriends still think it's worth visiting! Some people who walk 'The Way of Saint James' have an interest in the Spanish culture, for some it is spiritual conviction. We believe it can be very adventurous, as it is a personal challenge.
About
The way is named after Saint James, an apostle and rumored brother of Jesus, who is said to be buried under the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the route will take you. It usually takes you about 2-6 weeks, depending on where you will start your route. There are lots of accommodations (bed and breakfasts, campsites, lodges, etc.) on the way where you can rest at night and get a great breakfast in the morning to continue your tour fully strengthened.
Prices
Before you start your long way, you need to get a Pilgrim Passport, which only costs you a few Euros. If you want to be a real pilgrim, you walk for four weeks and spend less than €1000.
Extras
Make sure that you eat right during your tour! As your body will often reach its limits, a special nutrition is highly important. A sufficient breakfast is essential. During your walk you should eat snacks, such as dried fruits, nuts, energy bars, and chocolate, in order to provide the necessary calories and prevent low blood sugar. In the evening you should eat carbs, such as pasta or rice, to ensure you're getting enough slow-release sugar. Don't forget to drink!

What to pack
Pilgrims are said to be poor, a requirement that is still valid today. You need to bring only the bare necessities. What you definitely need though is a good backpack, basic clothes that are easy to wash and you feel comfortable in, resistant walking shoes, good socks, a small first aid kit, a drinking flask, and of course a map for your route, in order to not get lost. Remember that everything you take will accompany you every single day of the trip. A little insider tip: Clothes and medicine can be found on the way, so avoid bringing "just-in-case" items.
